FORGING MEANINGFUL COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
Throughout my experience working as a volunteer and service-learning coordinator, I found that forging meaningful partnerships with community partners was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding aspects of planning civically engaged learning projects.
Strong community partnerships require a lot of work, discussion, and research. Further, the most meaningful partnerships are true collaborations where the strengths of all people involved are acknowledged and built upon. Unfortunately, many service efforts focus first on the deficiencies of the population being served, thereby weakening the partnership from the outset.
In an effort to build strong service partnerships, I created an instructional design for service-learning educators in university settings. The goal of the design is to clearly explain the process of forming partnerships and approaching the partnership process by recognizing the strengths of the community being served.
