CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING
Culturally responsive teaching is based on the premise that individuals' personal and cultural backgrounds are what drive their motivation to learn. It also hinges on the concept that motivation is demonstrated by engagement. Creating educational activities that allow learners to feel included, comfortable sharing their experiences, and competent are essential tenets of culturally responsive teaching.
Wlodkowski and Ginsburg (1995) introduced the a framework for Culturally responsive teaching in the journal Educational Leadership. In that article they name four motivational conditions that learners and facilitators should continuously strive to create and enhance. Those motivational conditions are:

- Establishing inclusion—creating a learning atmosphere in which students and teachers feel respected by and connected to one another.
- Developing attitude—creating a favorable disposition toward the learning experience through personal relevance and choice.
- Enhancing meaning—creating challenging, thoughtful learning experiences that include student perspectives and values.
- Engendering competence—creating an understanding that students are effective in learning something they value.
Lesson based on Motivational Framework
In addition to being passionate about education theory and policy, I am also passionate about Italian! The document attached is an introductory Italian language lesson plan based on the motivational strategies outlined in Wlodkowski's (2008) book Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn. Each strategy employed is designed to create at least one of the motivational conditions listed above.
